GT6 has been updated. Alongside two VGT concepts (both heinous) is the addition of brake caliper painting and a super extraordinarily light livery editor. By light, I mean you can apply a number decal (from different templates) to most street cars.

That livery editor only exists because someone probably convinced someone like this:

"Hey, let's let them edit the livery"

"NO. THAT IS SILLY AND POINTLESS IN A RACING SIMULATOR"

"Oh, but what if they're all using the same car in a race, like those one-makes you love so much?"

"SO?"

"Well, you need to tell them apart."

"NUMBERS."

"Those are only customization on the race cars."

"I SEE. WE SHALL ADD NUMBERS TO ALL CARS."

"But what about personaliza-"

"NUMBERS!!! ONLY NUMBERS. ANYTHING MORE AND IT WOULD BE... CREATIVE."

" No no, we can't have that can we? Creative? In a video game? "

"NEVER."

That is both a great argument for and against livery creators.

Make sure you're in a street car or base-model race car (it'll say "Base Model" in the name) because those are the only cars you can paint.

Also worth noting is that you have to buy cars to get paint chips. In GT, you can't just pick a color from a color wheel or however else. You have to buy a car with the paint color you want, then you're free to use that color on any other paint-able car.

Car Select > Get In Car > GT Auto (between Dealership and Special Events) > Paint > Paint Body > Select Color > Paint.

Not to play devil's advocate, but you were always able to paint and apply visual upgrades to distinguish your car from others.

It's really great for cars like the Cobra.

Buttons up the car nicely.

Yeah, I know. I actually prefer GT to Forza in a massive way, but the paint customization just isn't enough for me.

I'm in that same boat.

I think the next step for GT would be to add simple, obvious decals like racing stripes.

Something easy to scale to different cars but tame enough to keep them from looking too gaudy.

But the new Aston can have Dirt and Snow tyres.

For me that doesn't redeem its looks. It's not just the Aston, either. I never find concept cars to be attractive.

They are just sketches compared to production cars. Their designs may be flashy, but they don't have the benefit of the earnest refinement that production designs receive.

There's nothing to ground them, so they always end up looking wacky for the sake of looking wacky.

I'm the type that finds beauty in all sorts of cars. The whole VGT project to me seems amazing because it allows me to Ring Lap cars that are pretty much impossible to build, within a sorta kinda simulation of real world driving.

The Nissan, Mercedes and Aston Martin VGT are my favorites so far, they capture this nutty lack of restraint very well, and they feel great as well.

From what I can tell it only works on the premiums although I have not tested enough of the standards to say for certain. I do like the fact that my BOSS 302 now looks more like a 302S from the number and custom wing.

Seasonal events will also give you special paint chips. And once you garner a paint chip you can use it for life!
